The National Historic Site in Fort Smith was originally the United States court house and jail. The gallows were located on the grounds where everyone could see as a reminder of the penalty and a short walk from the jail. The conditions in the jail were such that it became known as hell on the border. The U.S. Marshals were headquartered there and from there rode out to enforce justice.
